STRENGTH TRAINING FOR WOMEN

STRENGTH TRAINING FOR
WOMEN

01

For the majority of women who want to lose some weight and tone up the first and often only mode of exercise employed is long sessions of steady state cardio. While this may help shed some pounds in the beginning, the long term effects will not result in the toned and sculpted body you desire. To truly drop that body fat and keep it off for good it is compulsory for women to incorporate strength training into their regime. There has been tonnes of research into the positive effects of strength training for women by exercise scientists over the last decade, yet the number of women who adopt this form of exercise is still staggeringly low. Many women are afraid to lift weights for fear of becoming manly and muscular, this is just a myth and will not happen as women produce 10-30 times less of the hormones that cause muscle to grow.

Strength training is more more effective at raising your metabolic rate than traditional cardio exercise. In fact it has been shown that strength training for women can result in your metabolism being elevated for up to 72 hours after a strength training workout meaning that you are still burning calories while at rest. Some of the main benefits of strength training for women are:

  • Decreases in Body Fat – studies show that women who strength train 3 times a week for 12 weeks can gain 2 lbs of muscle while losing up to 4 lbs of fat. Muscle is more metabolically active than fat so the more of it you have the more calories you can burn. For each lb of muscle you gain you can burn up to an extra 50 calories per day.
  • Increased Strength – You will increase strength without bulking up, this will result in a leaner appearance and daily tasks will become easier. Increases in strength of up to 50% are common following a strength training program.
  • Decreased Risk of Osteoporosis – Weight training can increase bone mineral density by as much as 13% reducing the risk of osteoporosis. These benefits can be achieved at any age and is especially important for women who have gone through the menopause.
  • Reduced Risk of Back Pain & Arthritis – Not only does strength training have a positive effect on the muscles but it also helps to strengthen the connective tissues as well. This helps to alleviate strain on joints and can help to prevent injuries to the spine.
  • Reduced Risk of Type 2 Diabetes – Exercise has an insulin like effect and has a positive effect on the way that the body deals with sugar.
