Sports Massage Limerick

Sports massage therapy is not just for athletes and sportspeople, it is also for the everyday person who carries tension in the body from the stresses and strains of daily life. Recovery is a vital but often overlooked aspect of training and daily living. Any kind of exercise or stress can result in tension and wear and tear, so you want to give your muscles, tendons  and joints the opportunity to properly relax and repair. This is why many active people opt for a form of massage therapy called a sports massage.

What exactly is sports massage?

Sports massage is not like what you’d typically receive at the spa. Instead, a sports massage is a therapeutic treatment aimed at preventing injuries and keeping you in tip-top shape. Many different movements and techniques are used, examples of these techniques include; Swedish style massage, effleurage (stroking), petrissage (kneading), compression, friction, tapotement (rhythmic striking), vibration, gliding, stretching, percussion, and trigger points. These movements and techniques are used to try to help the body achieve maximum performance and physical conditioning with a decreased chance of injury or pain and a quicker recovery. Here, you’ll find a list of the top benefits of sports massage.

  • Increased blood flow
  • Increased elimination of exercise waste products
  • Decreased risk of injury
  • Decreased recovery time between workouts
  • Increased joint range of motion (ROM)
  • Increased flexibility
  • Increased sense of well-being
  • Decreased muscle tension
  • Decreased neurological excitability (nerves more relaxed)
