Exercise For Medical Conditions

Exercise
for Medical Conditions

01

Exercise is Medicine. Not only does regular exercise aid in weight loss, it reduces your risk for several chronic diseases and medical conditions. Research has confirmed that any amount of exercise, at any age, is beneficial. And, in general, the more you do, the greater the benefits. Physical activity is an essential part of any health promotion program and in many instances has been proven to be just as effective as medicine for managing and improving many common chronic medical conditions.

In order to prescribe exercise therapy it is essential to understand the basics of exercise physiology and training principles. Also, tailoring of a program depends on the disease and its stage, the baseline fitness level of the patient, and the goals of the program set together with the patient. Most doctors have very little knowledge of exercise or sports, and thus are not schooled in this art, so they do not prescribe exercise and often fail to even recommend exercise to patients who need it the most. At Limerick Sports & Fitness Clinic we are trained and experienced in the prescription of exercise for the management and treatment of chronic medical conditions. All of our medical clients are prescribed exercise based on the evidence based research from the most up to date scientific studies concerning their condition. We have helped clients to manage and improve common medical conditions such as:

  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Heart Disease
  • Hypertension
  • Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Marfan Syndrome
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
  • Peripheral Arterial Disease
  • Heart Disease
  • Osteoporosis

Before beginning an exercise program it is essential that you are passed fit to exercise by your physician/GP. Once this is done a consultation can be arranged with our Sports & Exercise Scientist to help design your specifically tailored exercise routine.
